Solarpods

2010-2011

Either freestanding or integrated into the facades of new or existing buildings, Solarpods are robotically automated solar building accessories that deploy only at times of peak solar efficiency. The flowers unfurl to reveal climatically fragile, yet hyper-efficient solar cells to collect solar energy when it is most abundantly available.  When closed, the metal shells protect the high-yield solar cells from environmental damage, and in particular, wind. This opening and closing action additionally provides a visual aesthetic experience that calls attention to the act of energy retrieval in much the same way as fountains historically did in cities for the infrastructural systems that involved public water resources.  The Solarpod allows architecture to overcome the application of only aesthetically inert technical solar cladding placed on roofs, in favor of a system that is strategic, educationally-focused and offers a dynamic everyday spectacle and reminder of the expenditure and retrieval of sustainable energy.
